ABOUT DR. RAJESH SONI
During my senior year of college at MIT, I changed my career path from Mechanical Engineering to Medicine when I realized that I wanted to make a more direct impact helping people on a daily basis. The years dedicated to realizing this dream were intense, but I loved the challenge. And in the end, I found a profession where I could build long-term relationships with patients and their families, providing them with compassionate care and creating healthcare plans that optimize their health and well-being through all stages of life. After graduating from MIT, there were a few premedical course requirements that I needed to complete. I stayed in Boston, working as a research assistant at Massachusetts General Hospital and taking classes at Harvard. |
That extra year in Boston worked out quite well - I met Jaymee, my future wife. She was in her senior year at Wellesley College studying Economics. After she graduated, we both headed off to New York, where Jaymee went to work in economic consulting, and I started medical school.
During my next four years at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, as I rotated through all of the specialties, Family Medicine had the greatest appeal for me because of the long-term relationships with patients and their families that are the cornerstone of providing excellent healthcare. |
After medical school, while Jaymee was getting her Master's degree in Economics at UC Davis, we got married. A year later we were in San Francisco for my residency at UCSF and Jaymee's PhD program at UC Berkeley in Information Management and Systems. That is also where we started our family, with the arrival of our first son, Jayden.
During my residency at UCSF / San Francisco General Hospital, I mastered the technical skills of providing the highest quality healthcare from the outpatient clinic, to the hospital and ICU. But most importantly, I learned the impact of behavioral health on the physical body and its prime importance for overall well-being. I took to heart the core principles of patient-centered care and a family-oriented approach to primary care. |
I then spent the first 10 years after residency practicing Family Medicine in Northern California. I started with the National Health Service Corps in a small farming community and then joined Sutter Health, a large multispecialty practice. Jaymee opened her first small business called Learning Lane, an educational playschool for toddlers and young children, and we were very fortunate to expand our family with the addition of Kyle, and then Logen.
When our oldest son was about to start middle school, our extended family encouraged us to join them in Arizona. Fountain Hills looked like the perfect spot to settle down for us. Indeed, it has worked out that way!
